Pilates mat
The first question most people ask is if there is a difference between a yoga and Pilates mat.
A yoga mat is generally thinner than a Pilates, one and so does not provide as much support. The reason a yoga mat is thinner is because it is easier to do standing balance work. Generally it’s beneficial to have a thicker mat for Pilates to cushion the spine and hips when doing the lying down mat-work exercises.
The cost varies usually depending on what it is made out of. Anything from £10 up to £50
Smooth or Grippy?
A grippy mat is best for Pilates classes with me as we work on standing balance exercises and you don’t want the mat to be slipping around the floor.
Material type.
Some are made from medium density foam. Some of the PVC and natural rubber mats are thicker 12mm (1/2 inch)
TPE mats are a good choice. (This contains no PVC, smell or harmful chemicals. It is a thermoplastic rubber. It lays flat after being rolled up. Watch out for the thickness of these mats though. As often they are 6mm (¼ inch) thick and if you have sensitive joints you may prefer something thicker.
TPE is waterproof and so easily wiped down.
Non slip so will stay in place when using it.
I have a TPE mat at home which is 6mm and personally I love it.
Size does matter in Pilates!
A short mat is no use for Pilates as you will be lying down and need the length of the mat and width to support you during floor-work exercises. So bear this in mind when choosing.
Thickness of mats.
The thicker mats are obviously more bulky and may need a strap to keep them rolled up. If you know that your joints are sensitive I would definitely opt for a thicker mat 12mm (1/2 inch) if you are generally ok with activities a 6mm (1/4 inch) mat thickness will be fine.
